Adult Mental Health Crisis Response Curriculum

Module 2. Mental Illness

Welcome to Module 2 - “Mental Illness”.  In chapter one of this module we will present information relating to our cultural differences and their possible influences in a mental health crisis.    As most crisis intervention programs will serve a varied population chapter two will take a look at the best ways for a crisis responder to work with people of different ages, educational backgrounds and races.   We will also cover persons with co-occurring disorders of mental illness and chemical dependency.

Chapters three will discuss suicide and parasuicide.  We will cover statistics for Minnesota, factors that increase the likelihood of suicide, risk assessment, prevention and crisis management of highly suicidal persons.  Chapter four, the concluding chapter will cover parasuicide and “Borderline Personality Disorder”.

As in the last module, content will be presented to you in a couple of ways, on screen or as a .PDF document for you to study.  To check your understanding of content presented we have included a number of short tests, or “Challenges” in this module.  Try to do the best you can on these challenges as a deeper learning can result as you consider the questions presented.
