Identifying Special Populations
Information gathered at the time of the initial call to the crisis program will help the crisis responder to identify a special population.
- Name of recipient or agency calling may indicate special cultural and language considerations.
- Date of birth will raise several questions, i.e., does your crisis program serve children and adults? If not, are appropriate referrals and linkages readily available?
- If the person is elderly:
- Further questions may be needed, regarding illnesses such as diabetes or cardiac illness.
- Current symptoms may indicate a need for medical intervention such as a sudden onset of confusion, chest pain or difficulty breathing.
- Any physical disabilities including the ability to ambulate and care for self.
- If the person is elderly:
- Address will indicate if the person lives independently or in assisted living, group home, public housing or with family.
- Phone number may provide a direct link to the client. If not, who can be contacted?
