Syndrome #4
Four Potentially Fatal Syndromes Due to Psychotropic Drugs Requiring Emergency Medical Care:
Lithium Toxicity:
Lithium (Li) is a naturally occurring element found to be effective for mania in 1947. Drugs and other conditions that interfere with kidney function contribute to Li buildup and toxicity. Dehydration and low sodium lead to high Li levels in the blood.
Symptoms:
Fine tremors (a routine side effect), nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Severe toxicity may be life threatening.
Management:
Treatment includes discontinuing the Lithium, inducing vomiting, supportive treatment and intravenous fluids. If highly toxic, dialysis may be required.
