Suicide
In Minnesota, in 2014, 683 persons died by suicide. Minnesota’s suicide rate has risen each year since 2004. In addition, over 7000 people were hospitalized due to self-inflicted injuries.
More than 90 percent of suicides are associated with diagnosable mental illness and/or alcohol and substance abuse. It is important to remember, though, that as many as 10 percent of people who commit suicide do not have any known psychiatric diagnosis. Also, more than 95% of those with mental disorders do not complete suicide. Suicide can be prevented.
