Some Facts about Alcohol, Alcoholism and Suicide

It is estimated that 50% of people who have Serious and Persistent Mental Illness (SPMI) also abuse substances.  Self-medication with alcohol and other substances to relieve symptoms is very common.

When providing Crisis Intervention services it is important to remember that the use of alcohol and drugs may increase impulsivity and reduce judgment.

Drug intoxication or withdrawal from drugs (both illicit and prescription drugs) may cause symptoms that are similar to symptoms of mental illness (i.e., paranoia, hallucinations, anxiety, etc.).
