What to do with a positive screen
A positive screen should lead to further assessment of the person’s substance use, both past and present, and its interaction with the mental health symptoms. This may mean a referral to someone with competency in integrated assessment; however, there is a growing number of providers with expertise in co-occurring assessment and treatment.
A thorough DA would include an assessment of whether a person meets the diagnostic criteria for a substance use disorder.
