This card is the older version. USCIS began issuing the new version, I-766 in January of 1997. Both employment authorization cards remain in circulation. This card remains valid until the expiration date.

On the I-688B, the immigration status is listed on the front of the card under "Provision of Law." All I-688B cards have the prefix 274a.12. Following the prefix is a small letter and number which denotes the person's immigration status.

The alien number is listed on the front of the card in the upper left-hand corner.

The expiration date is noted on the card indicating the time period which the card is valid.
