Determining Gross Unearned Income

To determine the amount of gross unearned income to use in the LTC income calculation:

• Do not average or annualize income.  Anticipate income as accurately as possible for each month.

• Count all unearned income unless it is excluded.  

Note:   These income sources are counted when using the LTC income calculation: 

• Public assistance grants.

• Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments and income used to determine that benefit amount.

  In situations when an SSI recipient is admitted to an LTCF on a permanent basis, the SSI is reduced to $30 on an ongoing basis.  These people are then encouraged to apply for MSA to supplement their income. More information about allowable deductions for SSI income will be discussed later in this module.
