Consumer Engagement and Participation
It is expected that the consumer will be fully involved as an active participant in the functional assessment process. To facilitate engagement and participation it is suggested that the provider use recovery principles and “meet me where I am” strategies. In addition, the assessor should consider the following:
- Plan to do functional assessment over time particularly if the consumer is having difficulty engaging in the assessment process
- Use motivation interviewing techniques and tools to solicit information
- Seek out opportunities to observe and engage with the consumer in vivo (natural setting)
- Construct scenario and role play with the consumer
- Have the consumer complete observation cards
