Minimal encouragements include a verbal and nonverbal. Verbal encouragements can range from saying “yes” or “go on” or asking “what happened next?” Non-verbal encouragements include making eye contact, nodding, orienting your body toward the person and leaning forward slightly.

These encouragements need not be lengthy. Well timed, brief and simple vocal replies indicate the responder is paying attention to the person in crisis. Minimal encouragements can help the person continue to talk and help the responder can control of the situation.
