“I” Messages

Use “I” messages. Validation is conveying that the individual’s feelings are OK.  Further, that the individual is not alone, given the same circumstances, others would feel the same way.  Affirm their worth and efforts to cope with the situation. The individual is likely to feel inadequate. Provide reassurance.  “With so many things going on, of course you are feeling overwhelmed”.  “I’d be angry too if that happened to me.” Somehow, convey the idea that the feelings the person is experiencing are normal.
