The term “health literacy” refers to the use of language that clearly communicates to everyone.  The terms and statements documented should be understood by the consumer, care providers and natural supports. It is important that the assessor conducting the functional assessment use common everyday language that is easily understood.

Health literacy facilitates better communication for everyone.  It eliminates words that carry multiple meanings and potential judgment. It also clarifies what is measurable and observable which makes monitoring progress and tracking outcomes more effective.
