Characteristics of Goals and Objectives

We also examined the link between the recovery vision and an individual’s goals and objectives. In the exercises above, you practiced identifying objectives that have observables behaviors and those that did not. So what else do we need to know and what skills do we need to develop to write excellent goals and objectives? Let us go back to the characteristics of goals and objectives for some or the answers.

Characteristics of goals and objectives:

  • Person-centered – Person’s interests or our interests?
  • Recipient Participation – Their own words or ours?
  • Linked to behavioral health issue (medical necessity) – Clearly linked to symptoms of mental health?
  • Individualized/customized – Specific to what each individual wants to achieve?
  • Real world measures – Tangible, Realistic and Achievable measurements of progress?
