a man looking at a laptop in deep thoughtThe Minnesota Mental Health Act require DHS to operate a statewide mental health information system. The current system was implemented in 2012 and is called the Mental Health Information System (MHIS).

Counties and contracted mental health providers, including adult MH-TCM providers, participate in the MHIS. Their role is to collect data on clients and services and then report this data every six months to DHS.

Participation in MHIS reporting provides valuable information used by the State of Minnesota to assist with policy making, program management, service administration and federal reporting. The benefits of timely and accurate mental health data include improvements to all aspects of Minnesota’s public mental health system.

The MHIS Reporting manual describes the data and service information that counties and providers are to collect and the procedures to follow in reporting on this data.
