MinnesotaHealth Records Act and HIPAA
The Minnesota Health Records Act regulates the collection, use, and release of medical records in Minnesota. The act covers data collected by doctors, dentists, nurses and other types of health care providers.
The Minnesota Health Records Act regulates access to health care records that contain information in an individually identifiable form. That means you can tell who the client is by reading his/her medical records.
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) includes privacy requirement for both public and private health care providers, and for organizations that bill and share health care records electronically and in other formats. It provides rules about:
- How you collect health care information from people
- How you protect that information
- With whom you can share information
