Motivational interviewing
Motivational interviewing (MI) principles and techniques can be very helpful in general in supporting clients in making positive changes in their lives; and specifically in finding that common ground where the involuntary client and the case manager can work together.
Motivational interviewing is a directive, client-centered counseling style for eliciting behavior change by helping clients to explore and resolve ambivalence.
Compared with nondirective counseling, it is more focused and goal-directed. The examination and resolution of ambivalence is its central purpose, and the counselor is intentionally directive in pursuing this goal. DHS recommends that case managers take training in and develop skills in MI methods to support clients.
