Assessment is generally among the first activities of the case manager. In the initial phase of the assessment the case manager should:

  • Engage the client to develop a relationship based on trust and support
  • Introduce the purpose of the case management process
  • Explain the purpose of assessment and engage the client’s participation
  • Begin to evaluate the client’s current level of functioning
  • Keep in mind that willingness to participate in the assessment process is the client’s choice.
