Screening for co-occurring mental illness and substance use

DHS suggests use of three valid, but brief screening tools: the CRAFFT, the CAGE-AID, and the GAIN-SS.

Co-occurring mental illness and substance use disorder is quite common among individuals seeking adult MH-TCM and other public mental health services.  Substance use disorders include alcohol and drug abuse or dependence.

Adult MH-TCM case managers should routinely screen for substance use problems unless the diagnostic assessment has already indentified the substance abuse.

Refer MH-TCM recipients with positive screenings for substance use problems for further assessment by skilled assessors of possible substance use problems.
