Protection of Individuals

Minnesota Reporting of Maltreatment of Minors Act (Minn. Statute 626.556)

The reporting of maltreatment of minors (under age 18) provides information on the reporting and investigation systems in place to protect children whose health or welfare may be jeopardized through neglect, physical or sexual abuse.

Professionals or professionals' delegates who engage in the practice of social services are mandated by Minnesota law to report suspected child abuse. As mandated reporters, case managers are required to make a report if they know or have reason to believe a child is being neglected or abused, or has been neglected or abused within the preceding three years.

If a child is in immediate danger (such as recent sexual assault or serious physical assault) or the child is abandoned, contact the local law enforcement agency immediately. If the child is not in immediate danger, contact the county child protection unit. Child Protection Services will assess the situation and report the incident to the most appropriate investigating agency.
