Linked to behavioral health issue (medical necessity)
For rehabilitative services, goals and objectives must be related to restoration and improvement of functional areas where impairment is the direct result of how the person experiences their mental illness. By doing so, we demonstrate medical necessity.
For instance, if a person wants to be more physically fit but their ability to exercise and eat healthier is not impacted by symptoms of behavioral health, then it cannot be a goal and objective on an Individualized Treatment Plan (ITP). It is still a worthy life goal and the individual should be encouraged and supported in pursuing it, but it is clearly not going to meet the medical necessity challenge.
Goals and objectives may require additional information/documentation to demonstrate medical necessity aside from the written goals and objectives.
