Recovery Goals
Solid treatment plans start with acknowledging the person’s personal recovery vision or outcome statement. A recovery vision or outcome statement is a description of what the person’s hopes and dreams are for their future. It is owned by the person and often stated in their own words.
A recovery goal/vision is a description of what the person’s hopes and dreams are for their future.
Examples of recovery goals/visions:
- I want to stay sober and healthy enough to take college classes.
- I want to be healthy enough to move into my own apartment, get a long-term job and be in a healthy relationship.
- I want to live in a cabin on a lake in northern Minnesota and spend my days hunting and fishing.
A person may not be able to express their goals for a number of reasons:
- They are influenced by the symptoms of their mental illness.
- They may have given up hope or the belief that goals could be attained.
- They haven’t been asked.
