Recovery Goals

roadmap with a sign that says: Recovery GoalsRehabilitation interventions can include helping a person identify their recovery or life goals when the mental illness is interfering with their ability to set those goals.

Recovery-oriented processes such as including the person’s perceptions in all assessments and fostering hope in all interactions can assist the person to clarify goals.

All goals can be toward or away goals.

Away goals focus on what is not wanted.

Toward goals focus on what is wanted.

Helping the person expand away goals to include toward goals will make both the goal-setting and the treatment planning process more powerful.

For example, a person might say he wants to “stay out the hospital.” Helping the person expand this goal to mean he wants to “stay in the community” provides more power to the goal and more options in treatment planning.
