Plan development: Service selection
Seeking persons' preferences as to which service outcomes will be focused on and how they will be achieved is a major component of service selection. Once the goals and expected outcomes have been agreed upon, issues around service selection often focus on providing sufficient time and resources to ensure that persons:
- Express their needs and preferences at critical decision-making points
- Are well informed about service options
Services that are desirable merely because they provide an enhanced quality of life above what is necessary to meet health and safety needs do not have to be funded, but must be if agreed to in the service plans.
Maintain an open relationship to the extent possible with all members of the team. Encourage discussion and questions and allow the time needed for negotiations and differences of opinion. Remember that if everyone agreed all the time, things would always stay the same.
