What is recovery?

Toijya Recovery from mental illness is a personal journey of healing to attain satisfaction in life, work, home and close relationships.

The guiding principles of recovery (hope, personal choice and a comprehensive view of the whole person) support a service system that promotes mental wellness.

In the adult mental health field – both within Minnesota and nationwide, you will hear a lot of emphasis on the value of recovery.

Recovery – used here - does not mean the “cure” of mental illness or the elimination of all symptoms of mental illness.  Rather it is the experience of the individual client. Mental health providers, including mental health case managers, are not solely responsible for recovery.

Providers need to support the individual in his/her path and process of exploring and achieving recovery as defined by the individual. Case managers need to respect the components of recovery in defining the relationship/partnership with the case management client.

The Minnesota Department of Human Service promotes a recovery based system.
