Individual-Case Management Relationship

A Case Manager and Hassan looking over some papersThe case manager’s ability to engage and connect with the individual is critical in developing the working relationship.  Developing and establishing a clear, defined and trusting relationship is an ongoing process and requires a variety of skills.

One of the most powerful ways to foster trust and an effective relationship is to have genuine respect for the individual, in part, by allowing the individual to make his/her own decisions, establish his/her own goals and set his/her own pace.

Case managers must develop a belief in the individual’s potential for growth. The case manager’s beliefs and attitude about serious mental illness, the people who are diagnosed as having a serious mental illness and the possibility of change and growth are communicated directly or indirectly to the individual.

The case manager must be aware of his or her actions that will influence the development of the working relationship.

The case manager is an important participant in the change process and must convey a positive and open perspective if helpful impact is to occur.
