Protection Amount Example

Let’s look at an example to illustrate the PAL.

Joe requests and meets all eligibility criteria for MA-LTC. He is a resident of an LTCF and his LTC insurance policy has been paying benefits. Joe’s worker submits the policy to DHS through a HealthQuest. The HealthQuest response indicates the policy qualifies as a Partnership policy and has paid out $24,000 in benefits since July 1, 2006.

Record that Joe’s PAL is $24,000. Joe may protect assets up to that amount.

Joe's Example Continued:

At annual renewal Joe’s worker contacts the insurance company to determine if the policy paid additional benefits since the HealthQuest communication. The insurance company reports that an additional $6,000 has been paid out and that Joe’s benefits have now been exhausted.

Increase Joe’s PAL to $30,000 due to the additional $6,000 in benefits paid out. Because the insurance company reported that benefits of the policy have been exhausted, there will not be any increases to Joe’s PAL in the future. The insurance company no longer needs to be contacted at each annual renewal.
