First Six Months

An LTCF resident’s homestead is excluded for the first six full calendar months after entering an LTCF. To determine the six calendar months of exclusion start with the first full calendar month in which the client resides in the LTCF.

Do not count the month of LTCF entry toward the six-month period.

Exception: Count the month of entry when the client enters the facility on the first of the month.

Even though the month of entry is not counted in the six-month period, exclude the homestead for the month of entry.

Remember to include full months of hospitalization in the six full calendar month total when the client entered the LTCF directly from a hospital.

Example 1:

Charlie was admitted to General Hospital on April 1. He was discharged directly to the Eternal Hope nursing home on May 5. Charlie requested MA-LTC on June 7 and is requesting retroactive coverage back to March. Charlie owns the home in which he lived prior to his hospitalization.

Action:

Exclude Charlie’s homestead as an asset for the months of:

March, because he was residing in the home for the month.
April through September, because it is the first six months of placement.

Example 2:

Wayne entered the LTCF on April 2. He was private pay until November at which time he requested MA-LTC on November 18. Wayne owns the home in which he lived prior to placement.

Action:

Evaluate Wayne’s homestead as an asset for the month of November, because Wayne’s first six full calendar months in an LTCF have passed at the time he requested MA-LTC. The six-month period is May through October.
