Once you have determined that a medical expense is allowable and begin to deduct it from the LTC income calculation, do not require updated verification of the medical expense at renewal.

Verify that the expense is still unpaid and is still the client’s responsibility to pay.

• Allow the expenses to be used as a deduction in the new certification period if verification is provided.

• Do not allow any expense that the provider has dismissed. If there was no income remaining in the calculation available to apply to the expense, it is possible the provider made a decision to absorb the cost.

Non-MA-paid allowable expenses incurred during the previous certification period may be reported at the renewal. These expenses are allowed as a deduction for the month in which the expense was incurred. Update the DHS-6059B with the changes, adjust MAXIS STAT and HC ELIG and MMIS RSPD accordingly and send the client an updated DHS-6059C.
