Community Spouse Review

It’s time to review what you learned in MA-LTC Basics! Try to answer the following questions using your materials from that course before checking your answer.

1. How is “spouse” defined?

A spouse is the person to whom another person is married in a union that is legally recognized in Minnesota, even if there is a legal separation or they are not living together.

2. Who is the LTC spouse?

The LTC spouse is a spouse who has a community spouse and meets one of the following:

Resides in or is expected to reside in an LTCF.
Receives or is expected to receive services through a waiver program for at least 30 consecutive days.

Note: The LTC spouse is used in a slightly different context for the purposes of an asset assessment. To learn more about how the term “LTC spouse” is used in an asset assessment refer to the Asset Assessment Course.

3. Who is the community spouse?

The community spouse is a spouse of the LTC spouse if the person being determined the community spouse does not reside in an LTCF or receive services through any of the waiver programs.

Note: The community spouse may receive MA or services through the AC program.
