Determining the type of income calculation to use and when to use it is one of the biggest challenges in determining MA-LTC income eligibility. You may need to refer to this module, your handouts and the HCPM in the future to help you make this determination.

You have now completed this module. You should be able to:

Explain the purpose of an income calculation.

The purpose of the income calculation for a person requesting MA-LTC is to determine the person’s obligation toward his or her cost of care which is in the form of a medical spenddown, LTC spenddown or waiver obligation.

Identify the result of the community and LTC income calculations.

The amount of income remaining after the income calculation is completed is considered the person’s medical spenddown (in excess of the income standard), LTC spenddown or waiver obligation.

Choose the appropriate income calculation for a client requesting MA-LTC.

A community income calculation (MA Method B) is used for people requesting MA-LTC through a disability waiver and for EW clients without a community spouse. An LTC income calculation is used for people requesting MA-LTC when they are residing in an LTCF, are SIS-EW, or are EW with a community spouse.

Apply the community and LTC income calculations at the appropriate time.
