Step 6 – Determine the Community Spouse Income Allocation Amount

The final step is to determine the maximum amount that the LTC spouse can allocate to the community spouse by subtracting the community spouse’s total monthly income (Step 1) from the monthly income allowance (Step 5).

Monthly Income Allowance.
- Total Monthly Income.
Community Spouse Allocation Amount.

Example:

Trent’s total monthly income is $1,500. His monthly income allowance is the maximum monthly income allowance, found in Appendix F.

Action:

Subtract $1,500 from the maximum monthly income allowance. Trent’s wife Trisha may allocate the difference from her monthly income to Trent.

There are situations when the allocation amount may need to be more or less than the calculated amount. When?
